DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATIONN OF ONLINE CAR RENTAL SYSTEM

 

ABSTRACT

Customers are the backbone of any company therefore their management plays a major role in deciding the success of an organization. car renting system makes it easy for the customers to request for a car from any spot. This system allows the customers to rent, view and make enquiry. Each customer in the database is associated with a position can be added and edited when need arises.

Most of the contemporary Information systems are based on the Database technology as a collection of logically related data, and Database Management System (DBMS) as a software system allowing the users to define, create, maintain and control access to the database. The process of constructing such kind of systems is not so simple. The system developed is called car

rental System. It consists of functionally related GUI (Graphical User Interface) and a database. The web based system is between the users and the database, where the data is stored for reliability, flexibility and functionality. The programming tool includes HTML, CSS3, JAVASCRIPT, BOOSTRAP, PHP and MYSQL platform. It involves a mutual development of application program and a database. The system was tested and found effective for the company. It is recommended for large organizations and establishments.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

 

1.1 INTRODUCTION

CAR RENTAL SYSTEM (CRS) is a web based system for a company that rents out cars. This system enables the company to make their services available to the public through the internet and also keep records about their services.

 The world has become a place where there is a lot of technological development; where every single thing done physically has been transformed into computerized form. Nowadays, people’s activities have been transformed into work done by computerized systems. One of which is the main target of this project which is about Car Rental System. The system of renting cars exist back in the previous years, were people rent cars for their personal reasons. Car renting is essential to many peoples’ plan to travel or move from one place to another for business purposes, tour, and visit or holidays, for these reasons Car renting is very helpful.

The starting point of Car renting is really unknown as said by Thomas Pretty; he also mentioned that many beliefs that Joe Saunders was the first man to start a Car renting company. According to Thomas Pretty, charges were calculated with the help of mileage tracking device. Many people became interested in the Car rental business and hence got involved. Car renting became more popular as years pass by. Today Car renting services is found all over the world, especially in the developed and developing countries. To make this service more popular and accessible to the public it has been transform into a web base system and connected to the internet were everyone can be able to have access to it.

 

   This time is an era of World Wide Web (WWW) where the world is considered as a small village where by users need to interact with internet technology for survival and for being competitive.

        This system will be developed in order to be used by Car Rental Company, specifically by ben car rent and tour, in renting cars to customers. It is will be online systems through which customers can view available cars, register, view profile and book car.

Online car rental and tour is a type of electronic commerce used for business-to-business and business-to –customer transactions. In this project, an attempt has been done to design a system which is used for car rental service. This document contains the software requirements for the Car Rental System (CRS). The main purpose of Car Rental System to be implemented is to manage information about Cars, Customers and the system users related to the company so as to increase the company business performance and speed of work.  The purpose of this document is to state all system requirements clearly for usage in the development stages ahead.

This project tries to identify the barriers, analyze the convenient steps in automating the car rental system and the technology available. The project is on the car rental online system, which is an attempt to automate the existing rental system.

Moreover, this system will help in managing the activities performed by the Ben car Rent and Tour Company.

 

1.2 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The information technology nowadays are growth from time-to-time, therefore, the demand of using Internet are increasing year-by-year. In addition, most of the traditional companies are shifted their traditional business model into the modern business model, which is open an online store to public Internet users to purchase the goods or services online.

The system of renting cars exist back in the previous years, were people rent cars for their personal reasons. car renting is essential to many peoples’ plan to travel or move from one place to another for business purposes, tour, and visit or holidays, for these reasons car renting is very helpful.

The project background is to develop an Online Car Rental System. This Online Car Rental System is combined of the reservation and informational system. Hence, this system will be focusing on the customers who would like to reserve cars and travel individually. And, the customers are able to view the latest and updated information, therefore, the system will be providing a greater value to the customers either reserving or surfing the system through the company website.

 

 

 

1.3          STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The problem with some of the current system is that:

1.       Based on observations, some small companies already have a car rental system which is not a web based application. This is a limitation that gives them capability to store customer’s details, but at the same time they cannot make their services more available to the public through the internet, they rather make use of posters to advertise their services to the public. These types of companies can overcome these problems by switching to the web base application of their type of system.

2.        They also make use of phone call reservations which is also limited to many features as compare to a web base system. For example a customer may make a phone call reservation for a particular car, but when he/she comes to pick the car, he/she might turn not to like the car; this could be because the customer could not see a sample picture of the car he/she wants to rent

 

1.4          AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main objective of the study is to design and implementation a car rental system for an organization. Specific objectives of the study are:

1. To develop a simple and secure system that protects clients information and confidential information of the organization.
2. To design a user friendly system that enables client check for availability of vehicle and book or reserve a vehicle online.
3. To design a system that enables clients pay their car rent online.
4. To develop a system that stores bookings and reservation information as well as payment history to help the organization keep track of transactions.

 

 

1.5            SCOPE OF STUDY

The scope of this project is as follows:

1.  The car rental system to keep detail records of both the cars and the customers, the duration they rent car as well as the type of car they rent.
2.        The system will be mainly design for small a company that renders it car rental services to customers.
3.        The system will have the ability to generate and print invoice for each successful transaction.

Level of Access:

 The system will have two levels of access:

·        The administrator

·       Customer

 

 

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The significance of the study is that it will provide a better means of renting cars online. It will facilitate the capturing of users information so that it will be easy to manage. The user can be called up by user ID. The research study will also be significant to other scholars and researchers seeking for valuable information on the subject of online renting.

 

 

 

 

 

 

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Some limitations were encountered during the process of this project work. These are:

1. 1. Insufficient information from the case study.
   2. Insufficient library materials for the research work,
   3. Lack of power supply, and cost of paying for megabyte for browsing

3. DBMS: A collection of compounds that support data acquisition, dissemination, maintenance, retrieval and formatting.
4. IMPLEMENTATION: This is the process of adopting a system
5. CAR: a wheeled vehicle that moves independently, with at least three wheels powered by mechanically, steered by a driver and mostly for personal transportation.
6. INFORMATION: Processed data or results (output)
7. PROCESS: This is the job done by the computer on the input to produce output.
8. RECORDS: A collection of related fields
9. RENT: a payment made by a user or tenant at intervals in order to occupy a property
10. RELATION: This is the linking trend that exists between two or more subject.
11. SYSTEM: The collection of interrelated components, which interact regularly to perform a task.
12. SOFTWARE: A set of instructions given to the computer in order to perform a specific task.
13. WEB: This refers to a vehicle for accessing and sharing of information.
14. SERVER: A computer or program managing access to a resource or service in a network.
15. SQL: Structured Query Language is a database computer language designed for managing data in relational database management system (RDBMS) and originally based upon relational algebra. It scope include data query and update, schema creation and modification, and data access control.
